Check Out the Competition
Whatever your product is there is bound to be someone else making something similar. You want your packaging to stand out, different colour, font with the writing. Depending on your product e.g. Personal care products you may have a lot of competition on the retail shelves.
Also who is selling you products? For example with personal care products, soaps, body lotions etc everywhere from supermarkets, department stores, gift shops, health spas. And remember that 75% of sales are Impulse purchases so if you can have a trial size in your products that can certainly help introduce people to you and your products. Easy to handle packaging is important too so people can handle it, read about the product and by picking it start to develop a type of ownership.
THE COLOUR OF YOUR PACKAGING
This is really important as different colours can evoke different responses. E.g. Red is a high energy, dynamic and exciting colour. Blue- peaceful, calming more reserved. White - pure, clean and simple.
How do you want your customers to feel when they use your products. Sporting equipment especially shoes and clothing would be great in red and hot pink, lots of energy coming off those colours. Things like bath oils and body butters would be best in pale and pastel colours for calming and relaxing. With any personal care products they themselves are probably such a great colour that clear or opaque clear packaging would be terrific as the product would be the colour.
PURCHASING PACKAGING TIPS
Shop Around, the internet makes it so easy these days. Save you a lot of time and energy. Try to find a local supplier though, if you can pick up the order yourself it can save a fair bit in delivery. Depending on what time you have and how long it would take to travel there, compare that to what it would cost for the company to get it to.
Make sure you know exactly what you're looking for in size, shape etc. And compare prices. it would help you a lot if you could package several different products in the same size packaging, ordering in larger quantities gives you a discount. Certainly don't be afraid to ask for a discount. try not to have too many different shapes and sizes with your packaging, keeping it as uniform as possible will cause a lot less confusion with your customers.
Don,t forget to calculate the cost of the packaging and add it into the wholesale cost of your product or you won't make enough money to come out with a good profit. labelling is another thing to take care with, creating your Brand what type of label, what colour, what font so many things to consider.
There is a lot to consider and decisions to make. Take your time, do your research and be disciplined with your budgeting.
